Seniors and Youth - Support Through the Generations

Support Through the Generations is a program that supports Black/African Origin/Newcomer older adults with dementia (and their caregivers), and works to build meaningful, supportive relationships between older adults and our community’s youth.

Support Through the Generations can help…

Older adults with dementia

And their caregivers - with systems navigation, accessing resources, and personal planning, with culturally-grounded support.

Reduce Isolation

Throughout this project, AFRO will be hosting in-person social evenings, where we will gather, connect, share food, laughs, and stories, and enjoy cultural presentations and activities.

Engage Youth

Core to this program is building intergenerational relationships. We are seeking youth volunteers who can act as “buddies” with older adult participants, and provide practical help, along with building relationships across generations.

This project is supported by the Supporting Inclusion through Intergenerational Partnerships (SIIP) project at the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging (RIA). SIIP is funded by the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
