Women’s Social Program/ Social inclusion and support for isolated newcomer seniors of African origin

Over the past two years, AFRO has identified that there is an increasing number of African seniors who are socially and physically isolated from their cultural community, which has had an impact on their physical and emotional health. Because many in this community are immigrants or first-generation citizens, seniors sometimes do not have extended family or a reliable support system to assist them. They instead have become reliant on one or two well-connected members of the community who have become overwhelmed by the many needs of these seniors. These low-income seniors are extremely isolated and living on their own with almost no support and are not connected to senior support services due to language and cultural barriers.
